Jaap de Hoop Scheffer comes from a wealthy Amsterdam family. His father was general secretary of the Exchange Association. His grandfathers were director of the National Mortgage Bank (paternal) and director of an export funda company in milk (mother's side). De Hoop Scheffer has done high school at St. Ignatius College in Amsterdam. During his time as a student in Leiden, he was a member of the student Miverva. Jaap de Hoop Scheffer is married (Brussels, 1974) and has two daughters. His hobbies are hockey, running, tennis and squash, and he loves to sing and read.
