The Torah on this parasha tells the people follow the ways of God and "stick va to him" va (1). The Sifri (2) quoted by Rashi asks how it is possible to stick to God, as elsewhere in the Torah He is described as a "devouring fire" (3). The Sifri replies that the Torah commands us we attach to talmidei chachamim va (wise men) (4) and their students; doing so is considered as if we apegáramos God Himself.

Rav Moshe Chaim Luzzatto in his book The path of the righteous, also talks about the importance of learning from talmidei chachamim, particularly with respect to personal growth. He writes that one of the main strategies of the yetzer hara (negative inclination) is confuse va people not to recognize the difference va between good and evil. Thus, people believe they are doing the right thing when, in fact, are being deceived by their yetzer hara. How can you avoid this trap?
Rabbi Luzzatto responds va with an analogy: a person is in a very complicated maze and there is only one road that leads to the exit. Most roads do not lead anywhere; in fact, away from their destination. The person has no way to find the right path because all seem identical. The only way to escape this maze is counsel with someone who has already gone before va and has left him unharmed. This person can advise who is stuck inside what is the right path. Likewise, who still can not control his yetzer hara find impossible to overcome without the guidance of talmidei chachamim who have spent many years refining his character (7).
We have seen how essential it is for the spiritual welfare counsel with wise men. In Deuteronomy, he recalls the episode where Jethro suggested legislate to stop all legal issues and to appoint men to advise people on certain questions (8). The practical reason va for this was to reduce the burden of Moses and the people who had to wait long to talk to him (9). Moses agreed, and instructed the people to appoint chachamim. The people gladly accepted.
Rashi points out that in his recollection of this incident, va Moses criticized people for their enthusiasm about the idea of Yitro. Moshe wanted to say: "They should have replied: 'Moses, our teacher, whose learning is better, you or your students? Is not it better va to learn from you, you suffered [by the Torah]? '"(10). Moshe criticized people for not wanting to learn the greatest of sages, even though to do so would have to go through many difficulties. We see here how important it is to be willing to make that extra effort to learn from chachamim.
