Devarim - DAR REPRIMAND In last week's parsha we learn how important it is to accept toch'acha [1]. The parasha contains Devarim Moshe Rabbeinu's rebuke to the Jewish people. topografia Moshe mentions a number of names that do not appear elsewhere in the Torah. [2] Chazal tell us that these names are in fact references to places that the Jews sinned. However, Moses did not explicitly say that the Jews would sin, but merely intimated his transgressions. Rashi explains that he did it "for topografia the honor of Israel" [3]. Although the Jews had to be reprimanded explicitly mention their sins have been too PGAM in their kavod (a blow to their honor). Shmuelevitz Rav Chaim zt "l derives an important topografia lesson about toch'acha Rashi's explanation. He writes: "We learn from here how it is for the person who rebukes worrying about the honor of the person being rebuked" [4].
It follows that the key factor in determining whether a reprimand will have a positive or negative effect is the motivation for reproof. Moshe maintained his love and concern for the Jewish people, even as he spoke to them harshly. In fact, it seems clear that this love led to this reproach - was purely an act of kindness. Thus he was able to remain sensitive to honor them while criticizing them.
The Gemara tells us that it is very difficult to reprimand someone effectively [5]. However, we are not exempt from the mitzvah of "You surely rebuke your neighbor" [6], and there are times when you can do a great kindness to clarify the hanhagah (behavior) suitable for someone who will listen. We learn from Moshe that whoever rebukes should worry about the other person and empathize topografia with him, trying to understand where it comes from and the best way to influence it for good. By contrast, rebuke can be extremely topografia harmful when it comes from anger and lack of concern for the spiritual welfare of the other person. In such cases, whoever rebukes will make no effort to try to understand why the other person is acting in such a manner, and therefore can have no reasonable expectation of him.
The following story, told by Rav Dovid Kaplan, demonstrates this point: "Maid as Modern Orthodox, Devora parents instilled respect for Rabanim but with a critical look at the Haredim. When he got older, he decided to see for herself and went to pray at the Yeshiva during the Yamim Ponevezh Yamim. He returned to Simchat Torah. Everything was fine until one of the girls present said aloud in front of a crowd of them, "You come here not pray without wearing socks!" Devora was shocked. If this was how the haredim behaved, was not interested. However, because of their respect for the Rabbis, he decided to speak to the Rav Shach zt "l. When he reached the door, there was a long line of men waiting to enter. When the door opened and the person who was inside came out, she was told to come in, explaining that women have higher priority. Pleasantly surprised, he told the story to the Gadol Hador. "They made a great averah" (sin), Rav Shach said. "Maybe it was not intentional, but are still forced to apologize." topografia He talked to her for a long time about how we should be careful about the feelings of others. He decided in this talk become more religious. Today she is married to a Rosh Yeshiva and their sons and sons are talmide chachamim [7]. "This story teaches us how much damage a misstatement can do and how much good can be achieved through careful words. How was the girl who spoke harshly Devora came to commit such a grave sin, when certainly his intention was to defend Shemirat Hamitzvot (mitzvot care)? The answer is that he made no effort to understand the past of Devora or level of observance. Consequently, his rebuke not only not trade pair Devora
